Shettar’s response indicates govt is worried about its investor-friendly image
BENGALURU:
Following acts of vandalism by disgruntled employees at the premises of Taiwanese smartphone maker Wistron in Kolar district on Saturday morning, Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar said the government would provide the necessary protection to the Taiwanese company. Shettar’s reaction follows on that of DCM Ashwath Narayan and suggests that the government is in serious damage control mode over the incident.
The violence at the company office in the Narasapur industrial area of Kolar was reportedly triggered by the non-payment of salaries for some months. The company makes Apple iPhones in India.
The Minister said it was not right to take the law in one’s hands, no matter what the problem was. “The state government has taken steps to develop industries and is committed to the protection of workers’ rights. The problem could have been resolved if it had been adequately addressed as per law,” he said.
‘Govt will protect investors’
Shettar said that the government would provide adequate protection to companies that have invested in the state. “We will take stringent measures to prevent such unpleasant events from recurring. We have already spoken with the District Superintendent of Kolar district and the Superintendent of Police in the matter,” he said.
A statement by the Minister said, “Karnataka is a peaceful state which has always welcomed foreign investors. This is underlined by the fact that 400 of the Fortune 500 multi-national companies and thousands of others are working out of the state.”
The statement added, “The government is committed to conducting a full and fair investigation into the incident and punishing the wrongdoers.”
