Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, a human skeleton was found inside a cesspit at a private apartment complex in New Mico Layout, under the jurisdiction of Begur Police Station, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The skeletal remains were discovered two days ago during a routine cleaning of underground cesspools within the premises. Sources said the cesspools had not been cleaned since 2018, and the skeleton was found about 10 to 15 feet deep inside one of the tanks located between two apartment buildings near a parking area.
According to preliminary police findings, the cleaning was undertaken following directions from the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), which had recently instructed all apartment societies to clear their cesspits in light of recurring flooding and sanitation concerns in the city.
Contracted cleaners were working on 16 cesspools in the apartment complex when they made the grisly discovery. Upon spotting the human remains, which included a skull and several bones forming a full skeleton, the workers alerted the police.
The Begur Police responded immediately and have since registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR). The skeleton has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to determine the identity of the deceased, the approximate time of death, and any signs of foul play.
“Our forensic teams will help us establish how long the skeleton has been in the cesspit and whether this points to a criminal case,” a senior police official told reporters.
Further investigation is underway, and officials expect detailed forensic reports within a week. The incident has raised concerns over poor maintenance and oversight of building sanitation systems, and residents in the area remain on edge as the mystery unfolds.
