Kalaburagi/Bengaluru, September 10: Universities must prepare students not merely for today’s jobs but for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow in an era being rapidly transformed by artificial intelligence, digital technology and biotechnology, Lok Sabha MP Radhakrishna Doddamani said at Gulbarga University’s 47th Foundation Day celebrations.

Inaugurating the Foundation Day programme at Dr B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on the Gulbarga University campus on Thursday, Doddamani said the key question before the institution was no longer how far it had travelled in the past, but how far it could move from here in keeping with the demands of the modern world.

Tracing the university’s development, he said the institution began in 1970 as a postgraduate centre of Karnataka University, Dharwad, and developed into a full-fledged university in 1980. He said it had since made a major contribution to the educational development of the Kalyana Karnataka region.

Doddamani also highlighted the university’s 794-acre campus and praised its academic and institutional achievements. According to the details presented at the event, the university has secured a B+ grade from NAAC, a 200+ NIRF ranking, a four-star rating from ICARE and a ranking in the 601-650 band in QS rankings.

Addressing students, the MP described them as the future ambassadors of the institution and urged them to measure success not merely by the positions they obtain but by the positive change they bring to society.

As part of the Foundation Day programme, teaching and non-teaching staff members as well as retired employees who had rendered distinguished service in the university’s academic and administrative fields were felicitated.

Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor Shashikant S. Udikeri said the contribution of serving and retired teaching and non-teaching staff to the university’s growth had been invaluable. He said new courses and certificate programmes were being introduced to improve the academic environment at the institution.

Udikeri said the university was being taken forward on the path of development while maintaining financial discipline. He expressed the hope that Gulbarga University students would be selected in greater numbers in recruitment to Karnataka government posts and emerge at the forefront of such selections.

He also said students and researchers should achieve success in competitive examinations, fellowships and conferences at the global level. The Vice-Chancellor further expressed the hope that professors from the university would gain greater representation in senior positions at the state and national levels.

Gulbarga University Syndicate member Udayakumar Patil, Academic Council member Prof. Hoovinabhavi Babanna, Registrar Prof. Ramesh Londonkar, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. Ashwini and Finance Officer Jayambika were present at the programme.
