Bengaluru: Congress will launch Bharat Jodo Yatra 2.0 from Shikaripura in Shivamogga district on September 30 and take the campaign to 84 Assembly constituencies where the party lost, B K Hariprasad said at a media conference at Indira Gandhi Bhavan.
The padayatra is planned for 84 days across the 84 constituencies, he said. Public meetings will be held from 1 pm into the evening as part of the programme.
Hariprasad said Madhu Bangarappa, Rudrappa Lamani, Zameer Ahmed Khan, B L Shankar and district leaders would participate in the opening march. Programmes in the constituencies would follow from October 4–5, he said.
The campaign will commemorate Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, which began in Kanyakumari on September 7, 2022, and entered Karnataka at Gundlupet on September 30 that year. Hariprasad said Gandhi walked about 600 km through 11 districts in Karnataka until October 21, meeting people and listening to their difficulties.
Outlining the new route, Hariprasad said the campaign would cover 29 districts beyond the 11 traversed during Gandhi’s march.
Asked why Shikaripura had been chosen as the starting point, he said the party wanted to highlight what it saw as the BJP’s shortcomings in the BJP state president’s constituency. He also said the campaign would raise awareness about what he alleged was damage to the Election Commission as a constitutional institution.
Former MLC Narayanaswamy and KPCC media and communications department head Ramesh Babu were present at the media conference.
