Kateel says a Cong govt would have named Yelahanka flyover after Indira or Rajiv Gandhi
BENGALURU:
After former CMs Siddaramiah and HDK took issue with the state government for naming the new Yelahanka flyover after Veer Savarkar, BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday jumped into the fray, saying that had the Congress been in power, the flyover would have been named after Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi.
The flyover’s inauguration by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday, May 28, which is Savarkar’s birth anniversary, has been postponed.
Both Kumaraswamy and Siddaramaiah had tweeted asking why the flyover could not be named after a freedom fighter from Karnataka.
In his own tweets, Kateel said: “Savarkar is among those fighters who fought for the country’s independence and integrity. Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy must read about him before making remarks.”

On the former CMs’ call for naming the flyover after a freedom fighter from Karnataka, Kateel said the state Congress had named institutions after Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi, but BJP had not opposed the decisions on the ground that those leaders did not hail from Karnataka.
Meanwhile, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs appreciated state government’s move to name Savarkar flyover in Yelahanka. In his FB post Joshi said that opposing to Savarkar’s name is like insulting freedom fighters of Karnataka.
