BENGALURU:

Amid tight security in the face of protests by pro-Kannada groups, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday inaugurated the new Yelahanka flyover which has been named after Veer Savarkar.

Among those present at the venue were ministers Dr CN Ashwath Narayan, Basavaraj Bommai, CT Ravi and Byrathi Basavaraj, CM’s political secretary, MLA SR Vishwanath.

Several pro-Kannada activists were taken into custody earlier in the day, including JDS youth wing president Praveen Kumar and Karnataka Ranadheera Force president Harish Kumar.  Pro-Kannada organizations have opposed the naming of the flyover after Savarkar as he is ‘not a Kannadiga’.

Karnataka Rashtra Samiti president Ravi Krishna Reddy tweeted that despite opposition from the people of Karnataka to the choice of name for the flyover, the government had ignored local sentiments.
