NEW DELHI:

It’s a return gift to the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa from Union government as turned 78 on Thursday as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has issued notification Mahadai River water allocation.

The notification was issued after Supreme Court had issued direction on allocation of water supply. With this notification, the Mahadai controversy has finally come to a logical conclusion.

Union minister Prahlad Joshi, on Thursday tweeted in Kannada, “The Union government today issued a gazette notification. Yesterday we had met water resource and River development Minister. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

It may be recalled that, the bench comprising Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hemant Gupta had passed the interim order. The Mahadi Water Dispute Tribunal had on August 14, 2018, issued orders to release 13.42 TMC of water (including 3.9 TMC for diverting the vacant Malaprabha River basin) from the Mahadai River basin to Karnataka.

In the final judgment the Tribunal, Maharashtra was awarded 1.33 TMC of water and 24 TMC to Goa. The UPA-2 government has formed the Mahadai Water Disputes Tribunal in 2010.

The Kalasa-Banduri Nala (diversion) project, which utilizes 7.56 TMC of water will help drinking water to Hubli-Dharwad, Belgavi and Gadag districts.
