Bengaluru: BJP leaders and workers held a Freedom Park protest in Bengaluru on Sunday against knives allegedly sent to the home of Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy. Former MP S. Munisamy demanded that an FIR be registered against Home Minister Priyank Kharge in the case, according to a BJP release.
The BJP had on Saturday complained to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and sought action under the Goonda Act over knives and other sharp objects allegedly ordered through a delivery app and sent to Narayanaswamy’s residence.
Speaking at the protest, Munisamy alleged that Priyank Kharge had always harboured enmity towards Narayanaswamy and that the Home Minister was directly responsible for the incident. “An FIR should be registered against him first,” he said. He demanded that the police register a suo motu complaint, investigate who was behind the incident and arrest those who instigated it. “Let us make the state Congress-free in the coming days,” he said.
Munisamy said the BJP would not break the law if Congress sent knives, but warned that the party was ready for anything. “We will show what our strength is,” he said. He accused the government of looting people hit by drought through price rises and said the Chief Minister tells farmers there is no money in his pocket, while giving party workers “work like goons”. “BJP workers can also get knives and blades. Congress should understand this,” he warned. He said Narayanaswamy was a state leader who had questioned the government when it was not on the right path, and that the government’s “goondaism” would not last long.
Former MLA Y. Sampangi said the goonda culture still existed in the Congress, which is why knives were sent to the Leader of the Opposition’s house. He demanded that the Chief Minister apologise on behalf of the party workers.
Bengaluru North district BJP president S. Harish said Congress had a “kotwal and goonda culture” and called the government “a lowly government”. He said the BJP had always kept faith in democracy and the judiciary. “If anyone enters Narayanaswamy’s house in future, we will also enter the houses of Congress leaders,” he warned.
A BJP speaker at the protest said sending machetes was not BJP culture and that the Chief Minister and the Home Minister would be responsible if anything happened to any BJP leader or worker. The release was issued by BJP Karnataka state media convener Karunakara Khasale.
