Bengaluru: One hundred sanitation workers, waste collection auto drivers and helpers were honoured as “Swachh Local Heroes” by Bengaluru South City Corporation at a Gandhi Jayanti programme in Jayanagar, where Commissioner K.N. Ramesh urged residents to make waste segregation and public cleanliness part of everyday life.
The recipients included 40 staff each from the Jayanagar and Bengaluru South divisions and 20 from Padmanabhanagar under Zone 1. They received certificates of appreciation and flasks in recognition of their continuing work to keep the city clean.
Cleanliness must continue beyond a one-day campaign
Speaking at Shalini Ground, Ramesh said a green and healthy Bengaluru requires participation and civic responsibility from every resident. Segregating wet and dry waste at home, avoiding single-use plastic and keeping public spaces clean are shared responsibilities, he said.
Cleanliness awareness should become part of daily life rather than remain confined to one day, the commissioner told participants at the programme organised by the corporation with colleges and NGOs under the message “Cleanliness is our duty, our responsibility.”

Walking while collecting roadside litter
Residents, young people and officials joined a walkathon and plogging activity around Shalini Ground. Participants picked up roadside litter for disposal to demonstrate how public spaces can be kept clean while raising awareness about environmental protection.
Plastic and segregation awareness in BTM Layout constituency
In a separate outreach activity, the corporation partnered with NGOs Saahas and Let’s Be The Change for an awareness procession in Adugodi and Rajendra Nagar, which fall within the BTM Layout Assembly constituency.
The campaign explained the ban on single-use plastic, solid waste management and segregation of wet and dry waste at source to residents.
Joint Commissioner Dr N.N. Madhu, Chief Engineer Basavaraj Kabade and DGM Manuja were among those present.
