Bengaluru: Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda opened Bengaluru South City’s first centralised streetlight control room in Jayanagar on Friday. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) said the system can alert maintenance teams to failed or flickering lights before residents report them.
The Bengaluru South City Corporation set up the control room. At the launch, Byre Gowda switched on 75,729 newly installed LED streetlights across 71 wards in its jurisdiction.
A 24 to 48 hour window for streetlight repairs
The GBA plans four dedicated control rooms across Greater Bengaluru. Staff will use a dashboard to track outages and electricity use. The authority said field teams will have 24 to 48 hours to address a fault after it is detected or a complaint is registered. Contractors who miss the stipulated deadline will face automatic penalties.
What the control system tracks
The system can schedule when lights switch on and off, track assets by GPS and monitor electricity use in real time. It can flag lights that are out, flickering or only partly lit. The GBA said the wider project covers about five lakh streetlights, including existing LEDs being linked to the monitoring system.
