Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner Orders Immediate Action to Prevent Sewage Flow into Lakes
Bengaluru, June 1: Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh on Sunday conducted an inspection of Parappana Agrahara Lake, Haralur Lake and Kudlu Doddakere Lake in Bommanahalli Zone and directed officials to take urgent measures to prevent sewage contamination and accelerate plans for the comprehensive development of the water bodies.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed the condition of the lakes and assessed ongoing efforts aimed at restoring and protecting them. He observed that sewage water was entering certain stretches of the lakes, resulting in water contamination and environmental degradation.
Expressing concern over the issue, Ramesh instructed officials to immediately implement corrective measures to stop sewage from mixing with lake water. He directed the concerned departments to identify entry points of sewage discharge and create suitable barriers and diversion mechanisms to prevent further contamination.
The Commissioner also emphasized the need for close coordination with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to address the root causes of sewage inflow.
Speaking to BWSSB officials over the phone during the inspection, Ramesh directed them to expedite ongoing underground drainage (UGD) pipeline works in the surrounding areas and ensure their early completion. He said the timely completion of drainage infrastructure is critical to protecting Bengaluru’s lakes from pollution and preserving their ecological health.
Officials of Bengaluru South City Corporation were instructed to coordinate regularly with BWSSB and monitor the progress of drainage projects to ensure that untreated wastewater does not enter the lakes.
As part of the long-term conservation strategy, the Commissioner directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the comprehensive development of Parappana Agrahara, Haralur and Kudlu Doddakere lakes.
The proposed development plan will include protective fencing around the lakes, construction of retaining walls, strengthening of lake boundaries and other infrastructure improvements aimed at improving environmental sustainability and enhancing public amenities around the water bodies.
Ramesh said the objective is not only to prevent pollution but also to create a sustainable framework for lake conservation, biodiversity protection and improved urban ecology in the rapidly developing southern parts of Bengaluru.
Senior officials accompanying the Commissioner during the inspection included Chief Engineer K.V. Ravi, Executive Engineers Deepa and Usha, along with other engineering and field officers.
The Bengaluru South City Corporation has been undertaking a series of inspections and infrastructure reviews across its jurisdiction as part of its efforts to improve civic amenities, environmental sustainability and urban infrastructure management.
