Bengaluru: A 43-year-old woman has been arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly stealing a significant amount of cash and jewelry from the home of her employer, a local businesswoman. Uma, the accused, is alleged to have pilfered ₹6.7 million (Rs 67 lakh) in cash and jewelry valued at over ₹10 million (Rs 1 crore) from the residence in Chamarajpet.
The Chamarajpet police launched an investigation after the victim, Radha, owner of a security agency in Nagarthapete, filed a complaint. Radha had employed Uma three months prior to care for her ailing sister, Sujatha, at a monthly salary of ₹23,000.
According to police reports, Radha had stored the proceeds from the sale of a plot near Electronic City, approximately two months prior, in a cupboard at her home. On June 9th, when Radha attempted to retrieve the money for a planned flat purchase, she discovered the cash and jewelry were missing.
CCTV footage revealed Uma leaving the residence on the morning of June 4th carrying a bag. Initially, Uma denied any involvement during questioning. However, after Radha filed a formal complaint with the Chamarajpet police and implicated Uma, authorities took her into custody.
During interrogation, Uma confessed to the theft. Police recovered ₹5.057 million (Rs 50.57 lakh) in cash and jewelry worth ₹1.266 million (Rs 12.66 lakh) that Uma had stashed at her daughter’s residence. The investigation is ongoing, according to authorities.
