Bengaluru, May 19: Ahead of the monsoon season, Bengaluru East City Corporation Commissioner D.S. Ramesh on Monday conducted an extensive field inspection of major storm water drain (SWD) development and maintenance works being carried out under World Bank funding across East Bengaluru.

During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed the progress of ongoing Rajakaluve development works being executed by the Project Implementation Unit and directed officials to take urgent precautionary measures to ensure smooth rainwater flow and prevent flooding during heavy rains.

Major Rajakaluves Inspected

The inspection covered several key Rajakaluve stretches and vulnerable locations, including: Yamalur Rajakaluve, Varthur Rajakaluve, Bellandur Rajakaluve, Croma Road area, Balagere Rajakaluve, Kaikondrahalli Rajakaluve, Saulukere–Wipro area.

The Commissioner reviewed ongoing desilting, maintenance, drainage connectivity and flood mitigation works at multiple locations.

Commissioner D.S. Ramesh instructed officials to immediately clean undeveloped “kaccha drains” in areas where storm water drain development works are currently underway to facilitate uninterrupted flow of rainwater during the monsoon.

Officials were also directed to regularly maintain already-developed Rajakaluves and remove silt, garbage, debris and other obstructions to preserve the carrying capacity of the drains.

The Commissioner issued several key instructions during the inspection, including:

  • Expediting all ongoing storm water drain works on priority basis
  • Ensuring proper maintenance of completed SWDs
  • Taking preventive measures in flood-prone areas
  • Avoiding inconvenience to residents during monsoon season
  • Strengthening coordination between engineering divisions

Executive Engineers from the Project Implementation Unit and the Storm Water Drain Division were instructed to closely monitor works and ensure timely completion.

Disaster Management Preparedness Reviewed

On the same occasion, the Commissioner visited the Fire Station located on Sarjapur Main Road and inspected disaster management equipment procured under the National Disaster Management Fund (NDMF).

The preparedness and operational efficiency of emergency response equipment available with the Fire Department were reviewed in detail.

Officials were instructed to ensure:

* Full readiness for monsoon emergencies
* Continuous operational condition of all rescue equipment
* Immediate deployment capability during flood situations

Focus on Flood Prevention and Public Safety

Commissioner D.S. Ramesh directed officials to effectively discharge their responsibilities to strengthen Bengaluru’s storm water drainage infrastructure, prevent flooding situations and safeguard public safety during the upcoming monsoon season.

Chief Engineer M. Lokesh, Executive Engineers of the Project Implementation Unit, Storm Water Drain Division, Kadugodi Division, Marathahalli Division and other senior officials participated in the inspection.
