BELAGAVI: The Uttar Pradesh government has paid ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of the four people from Belagavi who died in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede in January.
The UP government deposited Rs 1 crore towards the relief in the bank accounts of the the victims’ families through RTGS. The stampede at Prayagraj occurred during the Shah Snan on the day of Mouni Amavasya. Among those from Belagavi who died in the incident included the mother-daughter duo of Jyothi Hattaravath and Megha Hattaravath, Arun Koparde and Mahadevi Bavanur.
Forty days sfter the UP government announced the relief, the families have been given the compensation. Belagavi DC Mohammed Roshan said a recommendation has also been sent to the Karnataka government on awarding relief to the four families.
“Four people from Belagavi died in the stampede that occurred at Prayagraj on January 14. We coordinated with the Prayagraj administration and got the bodies immediately. We spoke to the Prayagraj DC and discussed the compensation and shared the bank account details of the families. On Wednesday, the funds were transferred and this was confirmed by our officials”.
Further, he said, the death certificates have some spelling mistakes. “Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravi Mander has promised to get it corrected in two days. The autopsies have confirmed that the deaths were due to trauma and stampede”, he added.
