BENGALURU: The state government in Bengaluru is implementing measures to ease the workload of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) by introducing a new organization known as Bengaluru Smart Mobility Infrastructure Limited (BSMIL).
Having already been relieved of its solid waste management duties, the BBMP will now be relieved of overseeing major infrastructure projects as well. The government’s objective is to establish BSMIL to supervise important infrastructure projects in the city, such as elevated roads, flyovers, and tunnel roads.
A Bill will be presented in the upcoming budget session to formally establish this new entity, which will function independently, much like the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
BSMIL will assume the responsibilities of the Smart City Limited, leading to the dissolution of the latter. This strategic move will enable the BBMP to concentrate on its core functions while BSMIL handles significant infrastructure projects.
Tushar Giri Nath, Chief Commissioner of BBMP, emphasized that the new unit will operate similarly to existing government bodies like Metro, water, and electricity supply services. He stressed that BSMIL will specifically oversee major road projects in Bengaluru, potentially further alleviating the BBMP’s workload.
