Justice Hemanth Chandangoudar dismisses pleas against BBMP wards delimitation

BENGALURU:

The hearing of the petitions in the Karnataka High Court challenging the August 3 reservation list for the 243 wards of BBMP was adjourned to September 21 by the single-judge bench of Justice Hemanth Chandangoudar on Friday.

The HC directed the authorities to submit details of the criteria adopted in preparing the reservation list.

On Friday, the arguments by the advocate for the petitioners centred around the absence of political reservation for OBCs. The court was told that the state government, BBMP and State Election Commission did not have any details regarding the same.

‘Other OBCs left out’

The Bhakthavatsala Committee report has not been followed, the High Court was told. Except for Muslim minorities, other OBCs have not been given representation, it was submitted.

The SEC contended that the reservation list has been prepared as per the 2011 population census,  while the government advocate sought more time to revert to the court on whether the government would redo the reservation list.

The reservation list reserves 81 seats for backward classes, 28 for SCs and 4 for STs.  Across the 243 wards, 126 wards are reserved for women candidates.

Meanwhile, the court dismissed the petitioners’ pleas against the BBMP wards’ delimitation.
