Bengaluru: A detailed project report has been sought for improving junctions on Bannerghatta Main Road between Gottigere and Tavarekere, alongside directions to remove footpath obstructions and provide safer pedestrian crossings.
Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao issued the instructions after inspecting footpaths on the approximately 3.2-km stretch between Kalena Agrahara and IIMB Metro stations.
The inspection identified gaps in pedestrian access, missing drain covers and obstructions caused by optical fibre cable infrastructure, traffic police cabins and BESCOM equipment. Officials were told to address the problems on priority.
Safe access between Metro station and bus stop
Rao noted that pedestrians lacked a proper, safe pathway even though the bus stop is only about 50 metres from Kalena Agrahara Metro Station. He directed officials to provide a footpath and examine a safe crossing near the station based on conditions at the site.
With a 10.5-metre carriageway and inadequate footpath facilities on this section, officials were asked to assess the available space and devise a suitable solution.
Relocate obstructions and cover open drains
Cable operators are to be consulted on relocating OFC chambers and cables that obstruct footpaths or interfere with drain maintenance. Traffic Police were asked to identify alternative locations for cabins, including near junctions where feasible.
Officials were also directed to examine whether BESCOM Ring Main Units could be moved into nearby property premises wherever feasible. Departments must coordinate to keep pedestrian paths clear.
Missing slabs over drains are to be replaced immediately and open drains covered to reduce risks to pedestrians.
Mid-block crossings and refuge islands
Rao called for mid-block crossings through the road median wherever needed, noting the lack of crossing facilities and deficiencies in some existing designs.
Pedestrian refuge islands should be provided at suitable points so people can wait safely while crossing. Similar facilities at junctions should be planned according to the space available and traffic requirements.
The directions concern preparation of the junction DPR, assessment of relocation options and remedial works; they do not amount to an announcement that the proposed junction improvements have been completed.
