Bengaluru: Former cricketer Anil Kumble has been appointed as the Forest and Wildlife Ambassador, announced Eshwar B. Khandre, the Minister for Forests, Biology, and Environment, on Tuesday.
During a press conference, Khandre highlighted Kumble’s extensive experience, noting that he previously served as the Vice-President of the Karnataka Wildlife Board. Kumble’s global recognition and passion for wildlife make him an ideal candidate to raise public awareness about forest conservation, development, tree preservation, and wildlife protection.
“Anil Kumble has a profound commitment to wildlife and a deep appreciation for forests. He has graciously accepted this ambassadorial role without any financial compensation,” Khandre stated.
On the occasion of his two-year anniversary as Forest Minister, Khandre also shared insights into his achievements and future initiatives. Over the past two years, approximately 8,848 ‘vanamahotsavas’ (tree planting festivals) have been conducted, resulting in the planting and nurturing of around 8.5 crore saplings across forest areas, along roadways, and on government land.
Looking ahead to the years 2023-24 and 2024-25, Khandre announced plans for the development of 120,975 hectares of plantations, the establishment of 25 new arboretums, and the creation of 35 new forest areas.
Additionally, he reported that in the last two years, 3.70 crore saplings have been distributed to farmers for planting in their fields and other locations.
The minister also revealed that the state government plans to develop a significant new park spanning 153 acres in Madappanahalli, near Yelahanka, further enhancing Karnataka’s commitment to environmental conservation.
