BENGALURU:

A case of molestation and assault of a 5-year-old girl snowballed into a major public protest near the jurisdictional police station on Sunday. Till the time this report was published, the protestors had not dispersed.

According to sources, a 25-year-old man hailing from West Bengal molested and even bit the child, sparking a furious sit-in by the public in front of the Sanjay Nagar police station late on Sunday evening.

Police sources said that the suspect has been taken into custody and the girl has been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to preliminary reports, the man is a neighbor of the victim. According to family sources, there was no sign of penetrative sexual assault, but the medical report is awaited.

Kannada group heads stir

However, the agitators led by Kannada Rakshana Vedike president Praveen Shetty were not satisfied with the police action and demanded that the suspect be handed over to the protestors.

Despite the efforts of Deputy Commissioner of Police Dharmendra Kumar Meena to pacify the crowd, the sit-in continued till late in the night. As a precautionary measure, a contingent of the City Armed Reserve police was deputed to the area.

The angry mob alleged that the suspect had bitten the girl and wanted to mete out ‘punishment’ to him themselves. However, the police have not yet confirmed these allegations.

Later in the night, Hebbal MLA Byrathi Suresh visited the protest site in a bid to pacify the crowd.
