Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to introduce comprehensive guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical education, with the state government preparing a structured framework aimed at ensuring effective, ethical and future-ready adoption of AI technologies across educational institutions.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Medical Education Department, Mohammed Mohsin, announced that detailed guidelines, along with a protocol and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), are being planned for release to regulate and streamline AI usage within the state’s medical education ecosystem.

Mohsin was speaking during a discussion workshop organised as part of the ā€œCampus to Career – Future Ready University of Collegesā€ summit hosted by the Department of Higher Education at a private hotel in Bengaluru.

He stated that Artificial Intelligence has expanded rapidly at the global level and Karnataka is now working towards integrating the technology more effectively into higher and medical education systems.

According to Mohsin, the proposed framework will help students and youth become future-ready while ensuring that AI tools are used responsibly and productively in academic and healthcare training environments.

Ethical Use of AI Under Focus

The Medical Education Department is also placing special emphasis on the ethical use of AI technologies, recognising growing global concerns regarding responsible implementation, data privacy, academic integrity and decision-making transparency.

Officials said the proposed SOP and guidelines are expected to define operational standards, usage boundaries and ethical safeguards for institutions adopting AI-driven systems.

Innovation Centre Planned at RGUHS Campus

Mohsin further announced that an Innovation Centre will be established at the expansive campus of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) at Bhimanakuppe on Mysuru Road.

The centre is expected to play a major role in research, innovation and AI integration across colleges affiliated with the university.

The government is also considering special AI integration initiatives across educational institutions under the Medical Education Department.

Mental Health Infrastructure Expansion

During the interaction, Mohsin also highlighted the increasing number of mental health-related complaints being reported in recent years.

To strengthen psychiatric and mental healthcare services, the Karnataka Government is establishing NIMHANS-model hospitals in Mysuru and Kalaburagi.

These specialised institutions are expected to improve access to treatment and support services for individuals facing mental health challenges.

Experts and Education Leaders Present

The workshop was attended by several academicians, experts and institutional heads, including JSS Institution Vice Chancellor Dr. Basavanagoudappa, Dayananda Sagar University Dean Dr. Pushpa Sarkar, Senior education officials and subject experts.

Officials said Karnataka’s push towards AI-driven education reflects the state’s broader vision of preparing students for emerging technological and healthcare challenges in the coming decades.
