Bengaluru: In a significant anti-corruption verdict, a Shivamogga court has sentenced a government official to two years of imprisonment in a Lokayukta trap case for accepting a bribe.

The convicted official, R.S. Parameshwarappa, who served as District Manager at the Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation in Shivamogga, was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 from a farmer.

The complainant, H.S. Janardhan, a resident of Hosagunda village in Sagar taluk, had applied for a borewell under the Gangakalyana Scheme during 2015–16. After being selected for the scheme, he alleged that the official demanded a bribe to facilitate the borewell work.

Following the complaint, a case was registered at the Shivamogga Anti-Corruption Bureau police station. On July 13, 2017, Lokayukta officials successfully trapped the accused while he was accepting the bribe at his office.

The investigation was conducted by Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Chandrappa, who later filed a charge sheet against the accused in court.

After trial, the 1st Additional District and Sessions and Special Court in Shivamogga, presided over by Judge Abhay Dhanpal Chougal, delivered the verdict on April 2, 2026. The court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹40,000.

The prosecution was represented by Special Public Prosecutor M.D. Sundar Raj.

The judgment is being seen as a strong message against corruption in public offices and reinforces the role of Lokayukta in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.
