Bengaluru, January 29: In a significant and humane move aimed at improving morale and work–life balance among police personnel, the Karnataka State Police has issued a circular directing all unit heads to grant leave to officers and staff on the occasion of their birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

The directive was issued by Dr. M. A. Saleem, Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP & IGP), Karnataka, through an official circular dated January 29, 2026.

Recognising Personal Well-Being of Police Personnel

The circular acknowledges that police officers work under intense pressure and challenging conditions to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. Allowing leave on important personal occasions, the DGP noted, helps personnel emotionally recharge, spend quality time with family, and maintain a healthy balance between professional duties and personal life.

“This human-centric approach contributes to reducing stress, enhancing morale, and improving overall job satisfaction and productivity,” the circular stated.

Mandatory Compliance by Unit Heads

The DGP has clearly instructed all unit officers that whenever police personnel seek leave on their birthday or wedding anniversary, such leave must be sanctioned without fail, subject to operational feasibility. The order discourages unnecessary delays or denial of leave on these occasions.

Strengthening Discipline and Commitment

According to the circular, recognising personal milestones not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by police personnel but also strengthens their loyalty, discipline, and commitment to the force. The move is expected to positively impact efficiency and professional conduct across the police department.

The order applies to all police units across Karnataka and is being seen as a progressive step toward a more compassionate and modern policing system.
