Bengaluru, January 20: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has suspended three conductors after detecting serious financial misconduct involving the misuse of UPI-based ticketing systems, officials said on Monday.

According to a BMTC press release, routine inspections conducted in December 2025 revealed that the staff concerned were issuing tickets using the official BMTC ticketing machines but collecting fare amounts through their personal UPI scanners, instead of the Corporation-issued QR codes. This resulted in the diversion of public revenue, violating established ticketing norms and financial discipline.

Following a detailed inspection and internal enquiry, the allegations were substantiated, prompting BMTC to place the conductors under immediate suspension pending further enquiry.

The suspended employees include conductors and a driver-cum-conductor posted in North East and South Zones, with diverted amounts ranging from ₹3,206 to over ₹54,000, cumulatively exceeding ₹1.05 lakh, as per official records.

Preventive Measures Announced

BMTC has issued strict instructions to all depot managers to ensure mandatory usage of Corporation-issued UPI scanners and to closely monitor revenue collection practices across depots.

In a significant move to prevent recurrence, BMTC announced that it will soon roll out a Dynamic QR-based UPI payment system, aimed at enhancing transparency, security, and foolproof ticketing.

The Hon’ble Minister for Transport has also directed BMTC officials to adopt a zero-tolerance approach and initiate stringent action in all such cases to safeguard public revenue and restore commuter trust.
