Bengaluru: In a deeply disturbing incident reported from Sanjaynagar police station limits, a 29-year-old woman allegedly set her four-year-old daughter on fire before ending her own life, reportedly following prolonged marital distress and abandonment by her husband.

The deceased have been identified as Sita alias Manisha (29) and her daughter Srishti (4), natives of Nepal. The incident occurred around 8:30 pm on January 15 inside their rented house at Krishnappa Garden.

According to police sources, Sita and her husband Govind Bahadur, also a Nepali national, had moved to Bengaluru about eight months ago. While the woman stayed back with the child, Govind reportedly travelled to Nepal a few months ago and did not return. Despite repeated phone calls and emotional appeals requesting him to come back, he allegedly refused and frequently argued with her over the phone.

Left alone to care for the child, Sita was reportedly under severe emotional and financial stress. She worked as a domestic help in nearby houses to support herself and her daughter. Police said that even on the night of the incident, she had contacted her husband once again, pleading with him to return. An argument reportedly followed, after which she took the extreme step.

Police said Sita allegedly procured petrol, locked the house from inside, poured fuel on her daughter and set her on fire, before setting herself ablaze. When neighbours noticed smoke and alerted the police, officers broke open the door and found both mother and daughter charred to death.

Senior police officials visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The woman’s mobile phone and other materials have been seized as part of the investigation. A case has been registered, and further inquiry is underway to establish the exact sequence of events.

The bodies have been shifted to a local hospital for post-mortem examination.
