Bengaluru: In a stern warning following recent gas explosion and fire incidents, the Bengaluru East City Corporation has directed all service apartments, hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations within its jurisdiction to strictly comply with prescribed safety regulations within seven days.

Issuing a public notice, Bengaluru East City Corporation Commissioner D.S. Ramesh said the move aims to prevent recurrence of tragic accidents and ensure public safety. Owners, operators and managers of such establishments have been asked to personally inspect their premises and ensure full compliance with safety norms within the stipulated time.

“Any compromise on safety will not be tolerated. Public life and property cannot be put at risk due to negligence,” the Commissioner stated.

Mandatory Safety Measures

The City Corporation has listed the following non-negotiable safety requirements:

  • Use of authorized and safe LPG/gas connections
  • Complete ban on illegal or unsafe gas cylinders
  • Adequate ventilation and fire safety systems
  • Electrical safety measures to prevent overloading
  • Valid trade licences and mandatory registrations

7-Day Compliance Deadline

All service apartments, hostels and PG establishments have been granted seven days to rectify safety lapses and align with applicable laws and licence conditions.

Inspections and Strict Enforcement

After the deadline, the City Corporation will launch a special inspection drive. Establishments found violating safety norms will face stringent action, including:

  • Sealing of premises
  • Suspension or cancellation of trade licences
  • Penalties under the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, 2024
  • Legal action in cases posing serious threats to public safety

Officials clarified that enforcement will be strict and uniform, and no establishment will be exempted.

The notice comes amid growing concerns over safety in densely populated residential accommodations, especially PGs and hostels housing students and working professionals.
