New Delhi / Patna: In a move that has caught even senior party leaders off guard, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Bihar minister and five-time MLA Nitin Nabin as its National Working President, signalling a decisive push towards younger leadership at the national level.
The appointment was formally announced through a brief press release issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, stating that the party’s Parliamentary Board has cleared Nitin Nabin’s appointment with immediate effect. The decision has sparked intense political discussion, as Nabin’s name was not among the widely speculated contenders for the post.
Within BJP’s organisational structure, the post of National Working President is widely viewed as a precursor to the party’s top leadership role, as the election of a National President follows a defined internal process. In the past, leaders such as Amit Shah were first appointed Working President before taking charge as National President.
A Bankipur MLA from Patna, Nitin Nabin has steadily emerged as one of the most trusted and fast-rising leaders within the BJP. Born in 1980, he has won five consecutive Assembly elections and has held key portfolios in the Bihar government, including Road Construction and Urban Development. Within the organisation, he has also earned credit for his role as BJP’s Chhattisgarh in-charge, where the party posted strong organisational outcomes.
Despite his growing stature, the timing and scale of his elevation came as a surprise across political corridors in Delhi and Patna, with many leaders reportedly seeking multiple confirmations before accepting the development as final. Political observers note that the move underlines BJP’s pattern of springing unexpected leadership decisions, often bypassing public speculation.
Party sources say the decision reflects the top leadership’s confidence in Nitin Nabin’s administrative experience, organisational discipline, and ability to work across regions and social groups. While caste arithmetic was widely discussed ahead of the announcement, insiders stress that performance and organisational capability outweighed social calculations in this case.
