Bengaluru: A tragic wall collapse near Bowring Hospital in central Bengaluru has claimed seven lives, including two children, after a sudden spell of heavy rain lashed the city. The incident, which unfolded within just 30 minutes of intense rainfall accompanied by strong winds and hail, has triggered outrage over alleged civic negligence.

The collapse occurred along a busy stretch near Shivajinagar bus stand, where several street vendors and passersby had gathered to take shelter from the rain. Eyewitnesses said over 30 people were present at the spot when the compound wall—estimated to be around 20 feet long and 8 feet high—suddenly gave way, trapping at least 11 people under debris.

Seven people died on the spot, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to Bowring Hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that the injured are currently stable and undergoing medical care.

Grief-stricken family members gathered outside the hospital mortuary, with scenes of emotional breakdown and anguish. Many of the victims were daily-wage earners and small vendors who had been working in the area for over two decades.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited both the accident site and Bowring Hospital, where he interacted with the injured and reviewed their condition with doctors. He announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and assured free treatment for the injured.

Preliminary findings suggest that the wall may have collapsed due to pressure from accumulated soil and ongoing work inside the hospital premises. The CM stated that an inquiry has been ordered to determine whether the structure was structurally weak or if negligence by officials contributed to the incident. Action will be taken against those found responsible.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over Bengaluru’s urban infrastructure and preparedness ahead of the monsoon. Locals pointed out that repeated warnings about unsafe structures and lack of proper arrangements for street vendors have gone unaddressed.

Authorities have also been directed to identify dilapidated structures across the city and take immediate preventive action to avoid similar tragedies during the rainy season.
