Health Minister says it’s a precautionary step as neighbouring countries are not polio-free
More than 60 lakh children in the 0-5 years age group will get the polio vaccine in the state. So as to requisition more staff for the programme, the Covid-19 vaccination drive has been temporarily stopped for four days, said Health and Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Sunday.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said that even if children have been given the polio drops multiple times earlier, they need to be vaccinated again till the age of 5 years. Mobile units have been set up for the purpose, he said.
There has been no case of polio in India since the last 11 years, but neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan are still not polio-free. Hence, as a precautionary measure, India is continuing with its polio immunisation drive, Dr Sudhakar said.
