Bengaluru: In a major crackdown on illegal plastic usage, the Bangalore Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has seized 5 tonnes of single-use plastic from a storage unit in Chamrajpet’s Tippunagar area and imposed a ₹10 lakh fine on the manufacturer.

Confirming the action, BSWML CEO Karigowda said that strict measures are being taken to make Bengaluru a single-use plastic-free city. “We are committed to ensuring that violators face heavy penalties and repeat offenders will face stronger action,” he stated.

The raid was conducted jointly by the BSWML and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) after it was found that the unit, despite repeated warnings, continued to use banned single-use plastic items. Officials said that the unit had been cautioned earlier against the use and storage of such products, but violations persisted.

During the raid, 5 tonnes of banned plastic were seized, and the remaining materials were sent to a laboratory for analysis.

The operation was led by KSPCB Member-Secretary Lingaraju, along with BSWML’s Deputy General Manager, police officials, and marshals.

Karigowda further stressed that stringent enforcement drives will continue across the city to completely curb the menace of banned plastics and make Bengaluru an environmentally sustainable urban centre.
