Tumakuru/Bengaluru, September 10: An ₹11 overcharge on a cold drink and water bottle at Tumakuru Railway Station ended with a refund to the passenger and a ₹1,000 penalty on the stall vendor after a complaint lodged through the RailMadad grievance platform was found to be genuine.

Passenger Bhuvan lodged the complaint on September 9, 2026, stating that he had purchased a cold drink carrying a maximum retail price of ₹35 and a water bottle with an MRP of ₹14 from a stall at the entrance of Tumakuru Railway Station.

The two items should have cost ₹49 in total, but the vendor charged him ₹60, resulting in an excess collection of ₹11.

After the complaint was received through RailMadad, the Chief Commercial Inspector enquired into the matter. The complaint was found to be genuine, following which the vendor was directed to refund the excess ₹11 to Bhuvan.

The vendor was also penalised ₹1,000 for overcharging.

The case highlights the grievance-redressal mechanism available to railway passengers through RailMadad, where complaints and suggestions concerning trains and railway stations can be registered digitally and their progress tracked.

RailMadad allows passengers to lodge grievances and submit suggestions through its online portal, mobile application or SMS. Passengers can also track the status of a complaint and provide feedback after it has been addressed.

The ‘Track Your Complaint’ facility allows a passenger to check the progress of a grievance using the complaint reference number.

Apart from RailMadad’s digital channels, passengers can lodge complaints or seek railway assistance by calling or sending an SMS to 139.

Railway passengers have been advised to use RailMadad for complaints concerning trains or stations during their journey so that grievances can be taken up for faster redressal.
