LONDON:
In a major development, the UK High Court has rejected the application dated 29.04.2020 of Vijay Mallya seeking permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court against its order dated 20.04.2020.
Vide its order dated 20.04.2020, a division bench of the UK High Court has dismissed Mallya’s appeal against the lower court order recommending his extradition to face trial in India .
The decision of the UK High Court to order the extradition of Mallya is a reminder that economic offenders cannot consider themselves as above the process merely because they have changed jurisdictions. The judgement also vindicates the painstaking investigation by the CBI, especially since Mallya had raised various issues with regard to the admissibility of evidence and the fairness of the investigation itself.
The extradition of Vijay Mallya was sought for offences wherein he faced allegations of conspiring with public servants and dishonestly defrauding the IDBI Bank to the extent of Rs. 900 crore.
The CBI appreciates the painstaking investigation of Investigating Officer Suman Kumar, Addl. SP, CBI in the case, and also the efforts made by the counsel of the Crown prosecution service in presenting the Government of India’s case.
