No loss of life or property, clarifies Karnataka disaster monitoring cell
BENGALURU:
Two earthquakes within a span of 12 hours on Monday and Tuesday caused panic among Kalaburagi residents.
The first tremor of 4.0 magnitude was reported on Monday, October 11, at 9.55 pm at Gadikeshwar, while the second of 3.5 magnitude occurred at Kupnoor on Tuesday morning at 8.07 am, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
The epicentre of the second tremor was 1.6 km WSW of Kupnoor Gram Panchayat, Chincholi taluk in Kalaburagi, said KSNDMC Commissioner Manoj Rajan.
The Gadikeshwar tremor’s intensity was a little higher than low intensity and could have been felt up to a radial distance of 50-60 km or more, according to the communique issued by KSNDMC.
“At Kupnoor, as per the seismic intensity map of the earthquake from the epicentre, the intensity observed is low and the earthquake might be felt up to a maximum radial distance of 7-12 km,” the release said.
“These types of earthquakes do not create any harm to the local community, though there may be slight tremors observed locally. None need panic as the intensity observed is low and not destructive,” KSNDMC added.
There was no loss of life or damage to property, officials said.
Earlier tremors
On October 1 and October 5, mild tremors between 2.5 and 2.9 magnitude were felt near Basavakalyan in Vijayapura. The region where the tremors were felt is close to Latur and Killari, which had experienced a massive earthquake in September 1993.
On October 10, an earthquake of 3.0 magnitude was also recorded in Kalaburagi.
