Bengaluru: A massive cleanliness movement has swept through North Bengaluru.
Under the leadership of Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar, a one-day mega drive collected nearly 599 tons of waste across seven divisions, marking one of the city’s most ambitious public sanitation campaigns to date.

The initiative also recognized Sarvagnanagar Assembly Constituency as the cleanest zone, awarding it the first prize of ₹1 lakh, followed by Byatarayanapura and Yelahanka, which secured second and third places respectively.

Commissioner’s Call: “Let’s Make North Bengaluru a Clean City Corporation”

Speaking at the award distribution ceremony held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan, Yelahanka, Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar urged residents, Pourakarmikas, and civic staff to join hands in transforming the region into a “beautiful and clean city corporation.”

“Our Pourakarmikas and civic staff work tirelessly to maintain public hygiene. Citizens must complement their efforts by actively participating in cleanliness and waste segregation,” he said.

The Commissioner highlighted the success of the corporation’s ‘Phone-In’ grievance redressal program, which is held every Friday to directly resolve public complaints. He emphasized that the North City Corporation is focusing on environmental improvement, public hygiene, and citizen-friendly services.

Eight-Hour Clean-Up Marathon Across Seven Divisions

The mega cleanliness campaign, conducted between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., spanned 95 kilometers of roads across divisions such as Hebbal, Pulakeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Teams cleared garbage, debris, silt, and trimmed tree branches while desilting roadside drains and cleaning vacant sites.

599 Tons of Waste Cleared in One Day

The scale of the operation was massive — involving 4,200 Pourakarmikas, 69 tractors, 70 auto-tippers, and 5 JCBs.
By the end of the day, workers had cleared:

  • 275 tons of construction and demolition waste
  • 28 tons of old discarded materials like furniture and mats
  • 86 tons of waste from vacant plots
  • 210 tons of dry waste

In total, 599 tons of waste were removed from North Bengaluru’s streets and public spaces.

Inter-Departmental Collaboration for Cleaner Bengaluru

Departments from Solid Waste Management, Engineering, Road Infrastructure, Health, Horticulture, Forest, and Lake divisions joined hands with Traffic Police, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and community groups to make the campaign a success.

“This collective effort demonstrates what coordinated civic action can achieve when citizens and officials work together,” said Additional Commissioner Amaresh H, appreciating the teamwork across departments.

Recognition for Best Cleanliness Performance

To encourage sustained cleanliness, the North City Corporation awarded cash prizes to the top-performing constituencies based on overall cleanliness, waste segregation, and road maintenance quality.

The winners were evaluated by a committee led by Chief Engineers Ranganath and Yamuna, in consultation with local RWAs.

Award Winners:
1️⃣ Sarvagnanagar Assembly Constituency – ₹1,00,000
2️⃣ Byatarayanapura Assembly Constituency – ₹50,000
3️⃣ Yelahanka Assembly Constituency – ₹25,000

Several other divisions received consolation prizes for active participation in the city’s cleanliness movement.

The event witnessed the participation of Additional Commissioner Amaresh H, Joint Commissioner Mohammed Naem Momin, Chief Engineers Ranganath and Yamuna, Deputy Commissioners Mangal Gowri and Prakash, engineers, health officers, solid waste management teams, and hundreds of Pourakarmikas.

Towards a Cleaner North Bengaluru

With visible public participation and cross-departmental coordination, the North City Corporation aims to replicate this model across the city’s five zones under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) umbrella.

Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar reiterated his vision —

“A clean Bengaluru begins with collective responsibility. Together, we can make North City a model for cleanliness and civic pride.”
