Basavaraj Bommai begins tenure with a pep talk to Karnataka bureaucrats

Immediate priority is to manage floods and Covid situation in Karnataka: CM

BENGALURU:

Not yet a day old in the hot seat, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai has tasked officials with working with a team spirit so as to deliver a reliable, responsible, transparent and efficient administration to the people of the state.

Chairing a meeting of the state’s bureaucrats soon after taking the oath as Chief Minister at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, Bommai pointed out that administration is a continuous process. “It has to function uninterruptedly in any situation. I have taken a firm decision to provide an efficient, honest and pro-people administration to the people of the state. I am stating this despite being aware of the difficulties involved in implementation, “ he stated.

‘Corruption equals cancer’

“Our state has the distinction of providing progressive and effective governance. We have to work harder in the altered scenario. Cabinet decisions will have to be implemented in a time-bound manner. Delay leads to corruption and corruption is equal to cancer in governance. Therefore, the government’s decisions will have to be implemented within the stipulated period,” the CM stressed.

“It is necessary for all officers to have clarity on the activities, policy, rules and guidelines of their respective departments,” he said. Calling on officers to carry out good work with courage and without any hesitation, he added, “The government is with you.”

“It should be our priority to manage the current flood situation, as well as Covid containment and management in the state,” the CM emphasized.

‘Cut wasteful expenses’

Calling on every department to cut down on unnecessary expenditure at the end of the year, Bommai instructed the state’s Chief Secretary to issue guidelines in this regard.

“Programmes should be implemented within the stipulated time with a sense of team spirit. Different departments should work in coordination. The guidelines will be formed after detailed discussions to clear all the doubts in this regard,” he said.

“A ranking system will be adopted in order to motivate departments on the basis of efficient performance,” the CM added.

Karnataka Chief Secretary P Ravikumar assured the CM that the bureaucracy would live up to his expectations.

Senior officers from various departments were present at the meeting with the CM.
