Revenue Minister Ashoka says heavy rains caused delay in fixing Bengaluru potholes

BENGALURU:

Revenue Minister R Ashoka has laid down a 10-day deadline for BBMP officials to fill potholes on all the major roads in the city. Speaking to the media after a meeting with civic officials on Thursday, Ashoka said, “Earlier, I had set a deadline of September 30 to fill all the potholes. In fact, I had personally visited many sites. The plant which supplies hot mix used to supply 16 loads every day. Officials have told me that due to heavy rains, the supply was disrupted for 12 days. As a result, the potholes could not be fixed on time. So far, potholes have been filled in 246 km of major roads.”

Giving a further break-up, the Minister said, “Overall, there are 13,874 kilometres of roads in the BBMP limits. Out of this, 1,344 km of roads are categorised as arterial and sub-arterial roads. Out of them, 895 km are in good condition while 449 km of roads have been partially damaged. I have asked the officials to fill the potholes on all the major roads within 10 days. To increase the hot mix supply, we have instructed the officials to ensure 30 loads every day. Currently, we are getting supply from only one agency and are looking for another agency as well.”

Smaller roads

On the other category of roads, the Minister said, “We will use local contractors and fill all the potholes in the next 20 to 25 days. In the 110 villages, BWSSB is laying sewage lines. The state government has released Rs 1,000 crore to asphalt the roads, for which tenders have been called. These roads will be repaired in the next 20 to 30 days. We will also blacklist contractors if the road work is of poor quality.”

Dilapidated buildings

Ashoka said BBMP had already conducted a survey of old buildings and had identified 185 dilapidated structures which need to be demolished. “So far, 10 such buildings have been razed. Now, I have asked BBMP to issue notices and demolish the remaining dilapidated buildings. We will ask Bescom to disconnect the power connection to such buildings, which will be razed with the help of the police.”

The Minister added, “ I have asked BBMP to conduct a fresh survey. I have also asked officials not to permit construction of buildings by digging up land deep without a safety wall as it will endanger the neighbouring buildings. If the corporation personnel demolish the building, then the building owner has to cough up the money which will be added to his property tax. I also request the public to inform BBMP if they have any knowledge of dilapidated buildings.”

Covid relief

On the issue of compensation for Covid-hit families, Ashoka said, “So far, 15,000 people have been identified as eligible beneficiaries for Covid relief. The state government will provide a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for BPL card-holders and the Centre will provide Rs 50,000. I have discussed the issue with the CM as well. We will disburse the amount at the earliest.”
