Chamarajanagar: In a shocking case of suspected wildlife poisoning, at least 18 monkeys were found dead near Kannegala and Kodasoge Road in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district, while two others are undergoing treatment after showing signs of recovery. Initial veterinary reports confirm poisoning as the cause of death, with autopsy revealing the bodies had turned a distinct blue, a common symptom of toxic ingestion.
Veterinarian Dr Mahadesh confirmed that over 20 monkeys were affected, and two were saved after prompt medical attention. “The bluish discoloration of the dead monkeys strongly indicates poisoning,” he said.
The monkeys were found in two separate groups — 11 in one spot and 7 in another — raising suspicion of deliberate targeting. Locals and farmers in the surrounding areas claim that no agricultural activity was ongoing at the time, suggesting the monkeys may have been lured and poisoned near the roadside.
Authorities suspect foul play and have launched an investigation. The Forest Department, in coordination with local police, has begun collecting samples for forensic analysis. “We are preparing to send visceral and organ samples for testing at the FSL lab to determine the exact poison used,” said Dr Mahadesh.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the illegal use of poison to control wildlife and calls for urgent intervention from wildlife protection agencies.
Further action will be based on lab results and post-mortem findings. Forest officials are also expected to file a case under the Wildlife Protection Act once the exact cause is determined.
