BMRCL chief Anjum Parwez says phase-2 work may get delayed by 2-3 weeks, orders probe into crane crash
BENGALURU:
Several labourers working on the Metro phase-2 stretch between Silk Board and KR Puram had a close shave at around 6.30 pm on Sunday when a heavy crane used to join segments collapsed from a height of 40 feet. The negligence of the crane operators has been blamed for the mishap.
While Metro engineers rushed to the mishap spot, BMRCL officials reportedly did not arrive till six hours after the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Namma Metro MD Anjum Parwez said, “This is the first time such a mishap has taken place during phase 2 of the Metro work. The broken launcher cannot be used again. There is a possibility that work will get delayed by two or three weeks, but we will aim to complete the work on schedule. We have ordered an inquiry into the mishap.”

Earlier landslip
In an earlier incident, Metro work on the Gottigere-Nagawara stretch was affected by a landslip on Tannery Road. The owners of the land had blamed Metro officials for the mishap.
Sunday’s mishap underlines some of the dangers associated with careless handling of heavy machinery. By contrast, the scene was different on September 22 when Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was present and congratulated the Metro staff as the boring machine emerged at the Shivaji Nagar Metro station after drilling a tunnel of 855 metres on the Kalena Agrahara-Nagawara route.
