Bommai say formal announcement will be made after Karnataka cabinet endorses the name change

BELAGAVI (Kittur):

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said the state government has decided to rename the Mumbai-Karnataka region ‘Kittur-Karnataka’ in keeping with the aspirations of the people of the region. An announcement to this effect will be made after a formal decision by the state cabinet, he added.

Kittur fest

Bommai was speaking at the launch of the two-day ‘Kittur Festival-21’ at the Kittur Fort, organized by the district administration, the Tourism department and the Kannada and Culture department.

The CM said the government would soon take steps to declare the Kittur festival a state-level event.

Freedom-fighter queen

“Kittur Jyoti will travel all over the state and will not be restricted to Belagavi district,” Bommai said. “Kittur Chennamma was 40 years ahead of Jhansi’s queen when she wielded a sword for independence. The first woman to fight for independence has to honoured. Kittur Rani Chennamma, who plunged into the struggle against the British, is an inspiration to today’s youth and women. Sangolli Rayanna and Chennamma (though not related) are the ideal of a mother-son relationship,” he added.
