150 cyclists participate in DULT-organised Malleswaram ‘Bicycle Day’

BENGALURU:

Karnataka Minister and Malleswaram MLA Ashwath Narayan showed he was no couch potato when he cycled a distance of 4.2 km as part of a ‘Bicycle Day’ event on Sunday.

‘Bicycle Day’ was organized to create public awareness on sustainable development and a healthy lifestyle. The Minister noted that cycling is popular in developed countries owing to citizens’ health and environment concerns. He said many countries have dedicated bicycle lanes, and noted that walking and cycling reduce sound and air pollution besides keeping people fit.

Kaveri Kedaranath of the BJP Mahila Morcha flagged off the event which was organized by CFAM (Council for Active Mobility) and DULT (Directorate of Urban Land Transport).

The bicycle rally began and ended at 18th Cross, Malleswaram after covering a distance of 4.2 km via Maramma Circle and Yeshwanthpur Circle. Apart from the Minister, around 150 cyclists of all age groups participated.

On the occasion, the Minister and Padmashree awardee and para athlete KY Venkatesh presented mementoes to cyclists who had traversed 104 km on a route resembling the map of Karnataka to mark Kannada Rajyotsava .

There was also a ‘ladies only’ cycle rally flagged off by Bicycle Councillor Arvind Dwarakanath in which 50 women participated.

As part of the event, live music and street games were organized along the rally route. Special needs children from Tamahar School also participated by cycling within the BWSSB compound.

Among those present was Krishna Panyam, Bicycle Councillor of Malleswaram. DULT has given the nod for ‘Bicycle Day’ to be held on any Sunday of every month for 3 months till January 2022.
