Tech park to come up at Open Varsity building in Mysuru: Ashwath Narayan

MYSURU/BENGALURU:

A technology park will be set up in the Mysuru campus of Karnataka State Open University and land for expansion of Mysuru airport will be provided immediately, Dr CN Ashwath Narayan, Minister for IT/BT and S&T, said on Monday.

Addressing the day-long event,‘The Big Tech Show@ Mysuru’, he said a ‘Mysuru Experience Centre’ which gives a feel of the tech ecosystem of the city will also be established. Narayan said Mysuru should become a cyber security hub and hoped at least 15 companies would set up their Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in the city.

‘Beyond Bengaluru’

On his recent visit to the Dubai World Expo, the Minister said investors are ready to bring in ‘lakhs of crores’ to Karnataka. He felt the state should grow ‘beyond Bengaluru’ to absorb investment in the ‘right way’.

“Though startups in the state are seeing major investments, 90% of it is coming from outside and only 10% from domestic investors. Domestic investors should come forward to invest and make use of the opportunity to garner economic benefits,” he said.

“The government is taking all measures to nurture the tech ecosystem evenly across the state by introducing an engineering R&D policy, a fab policy, providing land and power subsidies, and 30 weeks of mandatory internship for engineering students, among other measures,” the Minister said.

Union Minister sets Karnataka target

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Electronics & IT, addressing the event virtually from Delhi, said Karnataka should become a $ 300 billion economy by 2025, in line with Prime Narendra Modi’s target of the country becoming a trillion-dollar economy by then.

BV Naidu, Chairperson, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), said Rs 45 crore has been sanctioned by the government to set up a Common Facility Centre in Mysuru to promote innovative industries.

Dr EV Ramana Reddy, ACS, Department of Electronics, IT/BT and S&T, said in the post-pandemic situation when ‘work from home’ and ‘work from anywhere’ have become the norm, the city has tremendous potential to emerge as a cyber security hub and host GCCs.

Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM, addressed the event, while Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraje Wadiyar of the erstwhile royal family, Pavan Ranga, and Dr Meena Nagaraj, Director, Department of IT/BT, attended the event.

Later, Minister Narayan met Vidyashankar S, Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka State Open University, and discussed setting up an IT park on the university premises.
