Karnataka Milk Unions Seek ₹12 Price Hike; DK Shivakumar Says Cabinet Will Take Final Call
Bengaluru: District milk union presidents have sought a ₹12 increase in milk prices, with ₹2 of the proposed increase to be allocated to milk societies, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Saturday. He said the government would discuss the proposal in the Cabinet before taking a final decision.
The presidents met Shivakumar at his Sadashivanagar residence in Bengaluru and submitted their proposal for a price increase.
Responding to reporters’ questions near Freedom Park, Shivakumar said the government would obtain and examine reports on the situation in neighbouring Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh before deciding its next course of action.
“The district milk union presidents met me and requested a ₹12 increase, with ₹2 of that given to the societies. We will obtain reports on the situation in neighbouring states, examine them and then take a decision,” he said.
Shivakumar said milk societies were incurring losses at the prevailing prices and that farmers were expressing anger over the price issue. He said 50,000 milk producers had demanded an increase in milk prices.
The government was committed to protecting farmers and milk unions and would take the necessary measures, he said, while reiterating that the final decision on the proposed increase would be made after a Cabinet discussion.
The delegation included BAMUL president D.K. Suresh, Ballari Milk Union president Raghavendra Hitnal and Kolar Milk Union president K.Y. Nanjegowda, along with the presidents of the other district milk unions.
Karnataka Milk Federation Managing Director Dr. S.T. Suresh and administrator M.V. Venkatesh were also present at the meeting.
