Karnataka Lokayukta Uncovers Impersonation and Corruption Racket Involving IPS Officer, Cryptocurrency Trail Traced

Date:

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Lokayukta has initiated a high-profile investigation into a case involving impersonation and alleged corruption linked to former Bengaluru Lokayukta SP Joshi Sreenath Mahadev, IPS, and a man named Ningappa alias Ningappa Sawant.

Based on confidential information received by the Honourable Lokayukta, the anti-corruption watchdog registered FIR No. 28/2025 at the Lokayukta Police Station, Bengaluru, under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Preliminary findings suggest that Ningappa misused the Lokayukta’s name to extort bribes from excise and BBMP officials, falsely claiming connections with Lokayukta police officers.

Investigations revealed Ningappa sent intimidating WhatsApp messages to officials, allegedly demanding bribes using the codeword “kg“, and attempted to convert black money into white through investments in cryptocurrency. A forensic check of his phone uncovered 24 crypto wallets, with transactions amounting to over ₹4.92 crore.

Further, the probe revealed continuous contact between Ningappa and IPS officer Joshi Sreenath Mahadev. As a result, a search warrant was executed on June 15, 2025, at Joshi Sreenath Mahadev’s residence. A notice under BNS Section 35(3) was also issued for his appearance. However, both Joshi Sreenath Mahadev and Ningappa have since obtained temporary stays on the investigation from the Karnataka High Court.

In accordance with due process, the Lokayukta has written to the Chief Secretary of the Karnataka Government, directing suitable disciplinary action against Mahadev under the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.

The Lokayukta confirmed that no external complaint prompted the case. The institution acted suo motu upon learning of the alleged misconduct.

In a wider context, the Karnataka Lokayukta has filed over 230 suo motu complaints in the past two years. The agency has intensified efforts across the state through surprise inspections, revitalisation of water bodies, and initiatives to combat municipal waste mismanagement. Internal vigilance and digital monitoring mechanisms have also been strengthened to handle rising complaints and trap operations.

The Lokayukta has urged citizens and public servants not to entertain calls from impersonators or individuals claiming association with the institution in exchange for bribes. Citizens are encouraged to report such incidents directly through the Lokayukta’s helplines or email.
