The promulgated ordinance was passed on Friday. A copy available with TheBengaluruLive shows that the state government has brought amendments to section 8 of the BBMP Act 2020. The section had earlier provided for reservation for Backward Classes not exceeding one-third of the total number of seats in the BBMP council. Now, this section has been amended to provide Backward Class reservation to the extent of 50 per cent.
“The Backward Classes under sub-sections (2) and (3) shall not exceed fifty per cent of the total number of seats in the Corporation,” the ordinance reads.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court recently directed all state governments and Union Territories to provide 50 per cent reservation to Backward Class communities in local body elections.
