Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has entered into a major agreement with GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) to generate biogas from 500 tonnes of wet waste produced daily in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Thursday.

Addressing reporters after the signing ceremony at Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar said:

“GAIL will establish a biogas production plant at a cost of ₹123 crore. The state government has already allotted land for the project. This is Bengaluru’s first large-scale waste-to-energy collaboration, and more such partnerships are planned.”

He added that the initiative would significantly reduce the city’s garbage crisis and that the biogas produced will be supplied to households, hotels, and commercial establishments, promoting clean and renewable energy usage across the city.

“This project is not only an environmental reform but also an economic opportunity,” Shivakumar noted, emphasizing that the government is committed to sustainable waste management and energy diversification through green alternatives.
