MoU with Amazon will be a major step in empowering rural women entrepreneurs: Karnataka CM

BENGALURU:

The government’s intervention in economic activities is necessary to eradicate poverty, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Saturday. He was speaking at a function to sign an MoU between Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society and Amazon, organised by the Skills Development and Livelihood Department.

“Presently poverty is our biggest enemy. It is not enough to uplift the rural populace, we need to defeat poverty. We need to empower them economically. The MoU with Amazon, which has the capacity and the reach, in itself is a big move of intervention,” Bommai said.

Breathe change: CM

“The MoU puts a great responsibility of branding and exchange of product culture on us. We should live and breathe change. Apart from finding a good and sustainable market, we should script a success story that will boost self-help groups in rural areas and also small and micro industries,” Bommai said.

Karnataka abounds in great talent, products and entrepreneurs with the best business ethics. The Karnataka government and Amazon should work together for empowerment of rural women, Bommai said.

‘Aim for national market’

Referring to the ‘One District-One Product’ programme, the Chief Minister said local talent and products should be taken to the national level under the programme. Chennapatna toys, Ilkal and Molakalmuru sarees, and local food products will get a market boost with this MoU between the state government and Amazon, he opined.

Skills Development Minister Ashwath Narayan said the MoU, signed under the Sanjeevini programme, would focus on economic empowerment of rural women.

Amazon assurance

Amazon India’s Vice-President (Public Policy) Chetan Krishnaswamy said the company is committed to supporting small and micro enterprises. Amazon will help provide the best market access for niche products made by women’s groups, he said.

Chief Secretary P Ravikumar and other senior officials were present at the MoU signing.
