State checkpost racket busted
Duo were taking bribes to allow essential goods vehicles in
BENGALURU:
It was like a scene from a thriller movie as Bengaluru Rural Superintedent of Police Ravi D Channannavar disguised himself as a truck driver and caught red-handed some RTO officials who were collecting ‘mamul’ (bribes) to allow essential services trucks inside the Karnataka border at the Attibele checkpost near Electronics City.
Channannavar had received complaints of bribe-taking by RTO staff from some truck owners.
On Thursday night, he drove a truck in mufti to the checkpost, where he was shocked to see RTO staff collecting ‘mamul’ before allowing the essential services vehicles to enter the state.
Two RTO inspectors were arrested on the spot
On Friday, Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner GN Shiva Murthy suspended the two inspectors. A former Home Guard, Vivek, who was accompanying inspectors K Jayanna and Kariappa, has also been remanded to judicial custody by Sajith, Superintendent of Police, after the home guard was caught taking a bribe from a driver.
According to the police, the department has seized Rs. 12,350 from the Attibele checkpost office and Rs. 1,250 from Jayanna, Rs. 1,100 from Kariappa and Rs. 800 by from Vivek.
