BENGALURU:

The Joint Advisory Committee looking at the BBMP restructuring bill has 3 months to give its final recommendations to the government. The bill proposes a new law to separate BBMP from the purview of the KMC Act.

On Friday, the committee chaired by BJP MLA S Raghu had a preliminary review of the bill and also discussed the opposition’s objections to the restructuring proposal.

The ruling BJP wants to create 225 wards in place of the existing 198 wards in BBMP.

Earlier, a committee headed by retired chief secretary BS Patil on the restructuring of BBMP had submitted its report to the then Congress government.

Speaking to reporters after Friday’s meeting, committee chairman S Raghu said, “The government has no intention of postponing the BBMP elections.  The CM hopes the BBMP will have a better Act.  The committee was constituted by the Speaker of the house.  We have time until November to submit the report.  An election notification is expected in December.  The committee’s meetings will be held every Tuesday.”
