BENGALURU: In a major victory for K.J. George, the Supreme Court has cleared the Energy Minister of any wrongdoing by quashing the criminal proceedings against him and two IPS officers. The case, which involved allegations of abetting Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Ganapathy’s suicide on July 7, 2016, has been dismissed, affirming George’s innocence in the matter.

Supreme Court Justice Bela M had raised concerns about the CBI’s decision to clear Minister K.J. George in the DySP Ganapathy suicide case, which had caused a political stir. Today, a bench led by Justices Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma dismissed the case.

Minister K.J. George emerges victorious in the eight-year legal battle over DySP Ganapathy’s suicide, with the Supreme Court upholding the CBI’s decision to clear the minister of any wrongdoing. This validation underscores the thoroughness of the investigation and the court’s trust in the CBI’s findings.

On June 17, 2016, DySP M.K. Ganapathy took his own life by hanging in a hotel room in Kodagu. In a video he recorded before his death, he named then-Home Minister K.J. George. Following a heated controversy, the government assigned the CBI to investigate the case.

After a meticulous and lengthy investigation, the CBI concluded its inquiry in 2019 and cleared Minister K.J. George of any wrongdoing. The report also noted that contrary to the family’s allegations, there was no evidence of harassment by George. The inquiry found that Minister George had assisted DySP Ganapathy on several occasions.

Before this, the case of DySP Ganapathy’s suicide was investigated by a one-member commission led by Justice K.N. Kesavanarayan. The commission submitted its report to the government on February 27, 2018, clearing Minister K.J. George and IPS officers Pranab Mohanty and A.M. Prasad of any wrongdoing.

However, Ganapathy’s sister Sabita and others, showing unwavering determination, challenged the CBI’s decision to clear Minister George by taking the matter to the Supreme Court.

Energy Minister K.J. George, visibly relieved, expressed his confidence in the legal system, stating, “I have full faith in the law, and it has once again proven that justice prevails. I am grateful to be cleared of the false accusations against me.”
