With schools closed and income scarce, parents resorting to such steps: Minister
BENGALURU:
The closure of schools and the financial hardships caused by the Covid pandemic have led to an increase in child labour and child marriage cases in Karnataka, according to Education Minister Suresh Kumar.
Speaking to the media in Bidar, the minister said he has written to all elected representatives of the state seeking their feedback on the reopening of schools. He noted that with corona infections on the rise, the opposition of parents to reopening of schools is growing.
Suresh Kumar said cases of child marriage have been reported from Piriyapatna and elsewhere. Besides, parents are sending their children to work because they are out of school. “This is a matter of concern. I will hold a meeting with education experts to discuss the issue,” he said.
