Building crash hazard: BBMP chief orders resurvey of old buildings

Days after 2 building collapses in south Bengaluru, Gupta prioritises demolition of dilapidated structures

BENGALURU:

BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta has instructed zonal joint commissioners and chief engineers to form a committee headed by the Special Commissioner (Project) within 15 days to reconduct a survey of dilapidated buildings in the city. In 2019, the civic body had conducted a survey and identified 185 such buildings, of which 10 have been demolished.

At a virtual meeting with his officials on Wednesday, Gupta instructed the zonal commissioners and zonal joint commissioners to issue notices to the owners of the remaining 175 dilapidated buildings as per the earlier survey. He instructed the officials that following the re-inspection of the dilapidated buildings, contractors must be hired in each zone within 15 days to demolish the buildings.
